PCs will scrap gold-plated MLA pension plan

Baillie: It’s a test of leadership

BRIDGETOWN, NS – Progressive Conservative leader Jamie Baillie says scrapping the gold-plated MLA pension plan is a test of leadership.

“Change starts at the top, and when it comes to MLA pensions, change will start with me,” Baillie said. “It’s obscene that people who are elected to represent everyday Nova Scotians get a pension that is richer than any Nova Scotian could ever dream of.”

For every dollar an MLA contributes to their pension, taxpayers kick in six dollars. Liberal leader Stephen McNeil rejected the idea of fixing the broken MLA pension scheme. He said he is “prepared to accept it.” (The Chronicle Herald, November 3, 2011)

“I am proud to be a PC candidate and part of a team who understands the MLA pension plan is outrageous,” said Ginny Hurlock, PC candidate for Annapolis. “It’s up to Stephen McNeil to tell voters why he deserves this gold-plated pension.”

Mr. McNeil is prepared to accept a pension of over $130,000 a year, year after year, for the rest of his life. That’s over $4 million.

Baillie says the days of MLAs setting their own pay and benefits will be over when he is elected Premier.

“When it comes to MLA pensions, Nova Scotians will get real change with a PC government and more of the same with the Liberals,” Baillie concluded.
